Misconceptions, Issues and Benefits of the ‘Dark Side'
The Muggle Issue
More and more, it is heard from good, upstanding wizards and witches that there is nothing wrong with muggles and muggle borns. This if far from the truth.
Yes, we realize that muggles are mostly intelligent, but they are also beneath us. It is of old belief that muggles did not exist until squibs started being born, which means they are mutants of sorts. Because of their inability to perform magic, they lost an important cultural aspect.
Many of these cultural aspects that muggles lack, for the most part, is family relations. Because of their lack of magic, they once had problems of losing children at a young age, so they would breed among themselves in order to be sure that their family line would continue, causing a quick overpopulation. There are also muggles who have a tendency to breed beyond their care capacity, leaving small children to be raised in large groups in orphanages.
Muggles have found ways to make situations less bearing without the use of magic, but it is usually terrible for the world around them. With magic, there isn't ‘side affects' that their ‘technology' often has, making magic much more civilized.
Basically, despite their intelligence, muggles are uncivilized; little more than savages in our world. It would be unfair to say that they don't deserve life, because I am sure most muggles are self-respecting citizens among themselves, but for them to be allowed to overlap into our world would be disastrous.
Then there is that term that is used so often among muggle haters: mudblood. A filthy term in itself, it does present itself with more than one meaning. The most typical use is the offspring of a wizard and a muggle, which mixes the blood types, causing the offspring to be muddying the wizardry bloodline or a muggle born who has the possibility of marrying a wizard. I'm taking a different position using this term, and that is, once again, with culture.
For a muggle and a wizard to be married and birth children is an infringement on our noble culture. The child in this case is often raised knowing aspects of both the wizarding and muggle world, even though they are considered a wizard or witch. This only helps in the degradation of wizard culture.
Many of you are probably wondering about the place of muggleborns, then. Should they not be allowed to learn magic? There are many who would say no, that they should be allowed to learn magic. But that, once again, is overlapping the two cultures.
A few years ago, a great Culturist named Barimen Dolisim came up with a reasonable solution. If a muggle born wishes to learn magic, they should be isolated from both the muggle world and the mainstream wizarding world when they turn eleven. They will then be taught in a separate school where they will learn magic and wizarding culture, and where they will only be allowed to marry within themselves. Then, after the checking that their children or child was raised correctly, would then be allowed to attend prestigious schools such as Hogwarts.
Unfortunately, this was turned down by muggle lovers in the wizarding world, saying that this was unfair. Fortunately, though, the Dark Lord has agreed that this is the best way to introduce muggleborns into our world, and he would gladly start this program once he has his way.
The Dark Side Issues
One discussion issue that is prevalent (to an annoying degree) among Death Eaters and their families is why it is called the ‘Dark Side'. This phrase has a negative feel to it, making those who don't know their facts think ‘evil', but this is not true. Perhaps there are a few of the Dark Side who are in fact evil, but this phrase most likely started because of the will to learn the Dark Arts. A note to point out, even though a majority of Death Eaters and their families, and those who support (but don't necessarily follow) the Dark Lord, know a lot of Dark Arts, it is rare that they use them.
In fact, there are many Death Eaters who refuse to learn the Dark Arts. So are they still considered a part of the Dark Side? There are very few who would say no, while most would say the person is still of a dark nature because of their connection to the Dark Lord.
But how did the Dark Lord earn his title? I would guess that it started because of his excessive knowledge of the Dark Arts, not because of his wanting to keep the bloodline pure and his way of dealing with the issue. Wanting to keep our way of living constant is not a Dark wish. It is completely ‘normal'.
However the belief that all the Dark Lord's followers belonged to the Dark Side of magic started, it caused an enormous rip in the wizarding community, leaving those who believed that muggles had to right to be included in the wizarding world to be shunned and distrusted. Becoming even worse of a problem, our world is expanding to become a muggle-friendly culture and those who dislike muggles openly have trouble getting jobs within the government, even if they have no association to the Dark Lord.
Basically, if you are not a muggle-lover, you are now an outcast of society. This leaves the dilemma of going along with the Ministry of Magic and watching our world as we know it slowly die and live safely, or standing up for the rights of the wizarding world and quite possibly give up everything you have but your family and cause.
The Misconception
"The Dark Lord is unforgiving, cruel, and not very understanding."
This is just one of the phrases I have heard from those who have not personally met the Dark Lord. The Dark Lord is harsh and strict and not a very caring person – this I will not argue – but he is far from unforgiving and cruel is the way most think of him. There seems to be a general belief flying around that if you follow the Dark Lord, your life will be horrid and painful.
The Dark Lord only punishes when absolutely necessary. Similar to when a parent will punish a child harshly when he directly disobeys the rules. As the current situation of the war is, the Dark Lord has a few very strict rules that all his Death Eaters must follow and will only be punished if they are disobeyed. Punishments might be harsh (the cruciatus is used quite often in these cases), but living during the time of a war is harsh.
The Dark Lord realizes that not everyone who believes in his cause is capable or willing to be a Death Eater. If willing to help is some way, there are many projects that they can work on. Research is a big need, as he likes to be extremely accurate in his decisions but currently lacks the time to do an adequate amount of searching.
The Power Struggle
Yes, power is a big quest for a lot of Death Eaters, and becoming one is a great way to help you start your way.
There is quite a contradiction in the philosophy of Death Eaters, but it is one that works quite well. For the most part, a lot of Death Eaters a closely acquainted with each other and the old-timers are always willing to teach newcomers. The phrase "knowledge is power" is a big indicator of how the minds of quite a few Death Eaters work.
By joining the Death Eater ranks, you are given everything you need to succeed and advance, but it is, of course, up to you how far you go. That is where the contradiction comes into play; although almost everyone is willing to help you, it is a constant competition between those who wish to have power. I have heard many Death Eaters stating that they enjoy the competition. It gives you something to aim for, instead of sitting at a desk and working all day. It forces you to try to do your best, something the ‘Light Side' doesn't seem to like very much at all.
Overall, there are many misconceptions when it comes to the "Dark Side" of the current wizarding world war, but we are working on changing that. After all, all the best thinkers and revolutionists were considered wrong and outcasts. A change in the world has to start somewhere and some time, so it might as well be sooner than later.
